Mohammed Bin Zayed City – UAE
Mohammed Bin Zayed City was part of a larger development which would double the size of the city of Abu Dhabi. The goal was to deliver a master plan that can achieve a high degree of respect for cultural uniqueness, sensitive neighborhood planning, a diversity of experiences, stewardship of the environment, and participation between public and private sector development.
The new town consists of a central business and administrative spine, surrounded by residential neighborhoods, entertainment, recreation and shopping districts and education and technology parks.
The key feature of the master plan was to provide green infrastructure to give the community a feeling of connected-ness and sense of place. This was achieved by a ‘figure of 8’ green-way trail which connects all the neighborhoods to the central park at the hub of the town centre. This provides a distinct character as well as an alternate mode of transport by way of bicycle and pedestrian paths.
All neighborhoods were designed as self sufficient communities with shopping, educational, religious and other community amenities at their center. Major streets were designed as lush boulevards connecting the neighborhood and providing orientation to the motorist. Besides a central park smaller pocket parks were provided throughout the neighborhoods.
This project was completed while under the auspices of EDSA, USA.
